Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such treatments must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
