Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
